Tjørnuvík – 611 viewsTjornuvik is the northern-most village on Streymoy.
The village is picturesque and lies in the bottom of a creek on the island’s east side with a view towards the rocks ‘Risin og Kellingin’ (see below).
In 1956 a burial plot was found in Tjornuvik. It showed that people lived here already in the Viking-ages.
A Celtic bronze-ring needle was found also and this is seen as evidence that Faroe Islands had contact to the British Islands.

The village is pretty large by Faeroese standards and also has a relatively large harbour.

The ferry to Mykines goes from the harbour in Sørvágur.

There is a museum in Sørvágur called ‘Sørvágs Bygdasavn’. Tools for fishing are put on display here among other things.

The only airport in the Faroe Islands is located close to Sørvágur.

Sørvágur, Vestmanna, Sandavágur and Miðvágur in turn have a civic festival in the beginning of July.

There were buildings in Sørvágur as early as in year 1000.

In 1952 a factory producing fish-fillet was started in Sørvágur. This was the first one in the Faroe Islands but many have followed and now these factories are found in most villages over a certain size.

Sumba lies behind high mountains and it used to be difficult to reach in wintertime when the storms raged.
In 1997 a tunnel was blown through the mountains from Lopra to Sumba. This makes life easier for people
in Sumba who work in Vagur.
